Friends,
In these times of division, let's come together for a day of peace, reflection, and community.
On August 9, the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, we invite you to join us at the LA Green Grounds Nishida Teaching Garden for a potluck meal and to learn the art of making paper (origami) cranes. Our goal is to create 1,000 cranes, which we will hang as streamers in our garden, symbolizing our collective prayer for peace.
The tradition of folding 1,000 paper cranes has a poignant history. During World War II, Sadako Sasaki was a young girl who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6. 1945, only to succumb to the resulting leukemia at the age of 12. She believed that if she could fold 1,000 cranes, she might be healed. Although she did not complete her goal, her classmates continued her work, and today, people around the world fold cranes to express their deepest wishes.
Our event is a chance to honor this tradition, share a moment of unity, reflect on our common humanity, and build community.
- We invite you to bring a dish to share for potluck.
- Bring refillable water bottle or other drink for yourself.
- We will also be sharing how to make a Japanese dish, vegetable temaki (handroll sushi) that you can sample.
To help reduce waste, please bring your own fork and cup if possible.

We look forward to seeing you there and working together to create a beautiful and meaningful display of our hopes for a more peaceful world.
Limited space available, so please RSVP below to attend.
Please wear closed toe shoes in the garden and complete the LA Green Grounds' Release of Liability.
