Introduction to the Anthropology of Food

We welcome you to participate in LA Green Grounds Garden Keepers month-end potluck lunch at 11:00 a.m. Please bring a dish to share if you want to join in.

Once everyone has their food, the Introduction to the Anthropology of Food lesson by Natalie Marshall will begin.

In the field of anthropology, we understand food to be more than just calories. Food provides physical nourishment, but it also plays a big role in our social and cultural lives.

This lesson is an introductory exploration of the social and cultural dynamics of food, covering key concepts and ideas from food anthropology. This includes commensality (the idea that the act of eating together is socially significant in every human culture), differing cultural tastes and definitions of a “good” meal, food norms and taboos, and even how food becomes intertwined with issues of power and (in)equality.

This lesson will last approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on the amount of discussion and questions.  This is meant to be a participatory session.
