Please join us in the Good Earth Community Garden for this community event to learn about bees from Annay Serrano and Mitch Jacobson, passionate science-based beekeepers from the Master Beekeeper Program at UC Davis. This event is sponsored by LA Green Grounds, Good Earth Community Garden, and Partnership for Growth LA.
Their deep knowledge about honey bees and California native bees, along with their extensive experience from participating in “Sunday with the Bees” at apiaries in both Castaic and Brea, promises to provide us with invaluable information about the importance of these pollinators in enhancing our gardens.
We are thrilled to have them join us and share their insights. They are eager to engage with everyone and help foster a greater understanding of bees and their crucial roles in our ecosystem.
ABOUT ANNAY
Annay grew up in East Los Angeles, CA helping with her family’s sideline beekeeping business. Her mother, father, and two brothers seasonally moved their 500 hives to various agricultural pollination sites until a wildfire destroyed their apiary in 2017.
As of August 2015, Annay has worked at Los Angeles Honey Company, a local downtown beekeeping supply store, where she enjoys meeting, teaching, and learning from fellow beekeepers. While working there, she learned of and is about to complete the CA Master Beekeeping Program through the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources and University of California at Davis E.L. Niño Bee Lab.
After recently traveling to a class with world renowned beekeeper and bee insemination specialist with over 40 years of experience, Susan Cobey, Annay has now started her own instrumental insemination journey. Annay’s goal is to microscopically graft and inseminate select queens with drones from her own Greater LA apiary stock to maintain her honeybees’ docile and healthy genetics while preventing more aggressive bee traits in her colonies that challenge safe and effective beekeeping.
Annay loves bees and her fellow beekeepers like a big family. She loves to share her extensive practical and scientific bee knowledge to help beekeepers of all skill levels and to keep bees healthy and happy. Annay encourages those interested in beekeeping to consider attending the CAMBP, and Annay also leads her own hands-on beekeeping events and beehive inspection visits.
