LAGG Garden Keeper Marisha will share a short slideshow presentation about her recent trip to Madeira, an island off the southwestern coast of Portugal. She was enchanted by the island and its way of life.
From her photos and words, learn about Madeira's agriculture, farming, and fishing. She'll discuss the climate that allows a wide variety of plants to flourish — from unique tropical fruits like custard apple, passion fruit and banana-pineapple, to stone fruits such as plums and cherries; the specialized irrigation system — or levadas — that cover the island and double as hiking trails, and the terraced landscape that makes the agriculture of Madeira unique.
Before the presentation, we'll begin by harvesting from the LA Green Grounds Teaching Garden and make a salad to share. Feel free to bring an accompaniment to share.
